Rave Boots
- 2009-11-10 (Tue)
- DESIGN

When I first visited America years ago, I was surprised at how the Rave kids looked
compared to the UK. It had evolved into something quite different and cartoon-like,
and hung around for a long time.
I was shown these curious artifacts in LA, made sometime in the early-mid 90's.
They look very bizarre now and would have looked bizarre at the time too, but I
remember there was a place on St. Marks Place in NYC that was customising
Converse and other boots in a similar way as late as 2000.

Another bizarre pair of Dr. Martens boots, this time from the 70's can be seen at
the Northampton Shoe Museum, as made for Elton John in Tommy.

Art:21 (season 5) 2009.
- 2009-10-30 (Fri)
- DESIGN

Timely and timeless, global and local, beautiful and provocative, contemporary art
challenges us to look at our world in new ways. Contemporary artists grapple with
the complex issues of our time, ask tough questions, and make works that delight,
amaze and sometimes unsettle audiences worldwide.
Yet rarely are we provided access to the artists who create the art of our time.
"Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century" provides viewers a unique look at today's
artists when it returns to PBS for its fifth season in October 2009. In its most international season to date, Art21's four-part series reveals artists' perspectives on
current affairs, politics, economics, history and popular culture, as well as
showcases the artists' working processes and their studios.
